Connected devices. No customer identity.
How should we build a secure ownership layer?
Recommended approach
Separate customer identity from device identity. Use a customer identity provider for sign-in and a backend ownership registry to link an authenticated customer to a verified device. Bluetooth pairing alone is not proof of ownership.
Core components
- Mobile application: sign-in, verified device claim, consent and recovery.
- Customer identity provider: OAuth 2.0 / OIDC authorization code with PKCE; policy-based MFA.
- Device registry: device identifier, owner reference, claim status and ownership history.
- Backend APIs: authorization checks on every device operation and auditable transfer/revocation.
Decisions to resolve
- Can the hardware prove possession using a signed challenge or a factory-issued secret?
- Which countries and age verification requirements apply?
- Does the current firmware support secure updates and key storage?
Handoff to technical architecture
Define the claim / unclaim API, device lifecycle, recovery boundaries and trust model. Ask cybersecurity to review account takeover, replay, unauthorized transfers and lost-device scenarios.
Acceptance criteria
An unverified account cannot claim a device. A customer cannot access another customer’s device. A transferred device no longer accepts commands from its previous owner.
